Election Day 2009
Understanding how important the election of 2009 was, I was dedicated to helping elect the Democratic ticket. On Election Day, my team started at the Burbank Precinct in Hampton at 6 AM, manning the polls and handing out sample ballots to voters. We finished the night some 14 hours later, watching the election returns with the Stafford County Democrats after traveling throughout the 1st congressional district, working to increase vote totals for local, and statewide Democrats. Here is where our team went yesterday:
Newport News, Hilton Precinct
Williamsburg City, Stryker Precinct
James City County, Jamestown High School
King William County, National Guard Armory
Middlesex County, Rescue Squad Building
Mathews County, Mathews High School
Lancaster County, Kilmarnock
Lancaster County, Irvington
Lancaster County, Lively
Northumberland County, County Library
Northumberland County, Callao Fire and Rescue Squad
Westmoreland County, Washington and Lee High School
Westmoreland County, Cople Elementary
Richmond County, Fire Rescue Hall
And then finally to the Fire Station in Essex County where I voted.
As we drove through the 1st CD supporting local and state candidates, it became clear that at every precinct we visited that the Republicans were very well organized and motivated. It resembled the atmosphere that I witnessed last year during the Presidential election. They were us last year. Yesterday's election reminded me of 1993 when, George Allen and the Republicans swept into power. In '93 and '09, we lost our passion. The following year ('94) the Republicans won both the U.S. House and Senate.
When you ask anyone on the street about the difference between a Democrat and a Republican, most people will say the Democrat is for the average person and the Republicans are for the rich. In the 2010 election, we need to ensure that the Democratic message is clear. We need to remember who we are as a party and stand up for our principles. We are 12 months from the next election and for Democrats it will be one of the most important elections in party history. It will be a test of our policies, principles, and work ethic. I am playing to win, and I know that the 1st CD Democrats want to win. We are going to turn this district blue and position President Obama for victory in 2012. We can't let '94 happen again.
Thanks to all of you who worked so hard to support the party this year and in the future.
